Born in England, Richard graduated from High School and signed as a youth team player for former English Premier League side Blackpool Football Club. After two years at the club Richard had spells at Fleetwood Town FC and Kendal Town. During this time he also began obtaining his coaching qualifications, gaining his UEFA coaching license which presented him with the opportunity to coach within the Blackpool FC Academy at the Center of Excellence.
In 2001, he came to the U.S. after being offered a soccer scholarship, and over four years he represented Bryant and Stratton and LeMoyne College during which he claimed a NJCAA Division I National Championship, All-American honors, and the MVP award three consecutive years. Shaw also spent two more years as the assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at LeMoyne while completing a Bachelor of Science degree in information systems.
Over the last 10 years Richard has worked along side his colleague, Soccer Central’s Director of Operations Chris Pelligra, and together they have steered the organization into a leading youth sports program. Additionally, Richard enjoyed a successful playing career after college, and finally retired in 2012 after playing with the Syracuse Silver Knights.
In addition to his work with NY Soccer Central, Richard is the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at SUNY Adirondack. He also commentates for Time Warner Sports and recently co-wrote the bestselling youth soccer book ‘Coaching Outside the Box: Changing the Mindset in Youth Soccer’ with U.K. sport scientist Paul Mairs.
